Question:
Naruto: The Hyuuga Clan's main and branch families?
2007-06-09 09:53:18 UTC
I was just wondering how the Hyuuga Clan's system of the branch and main families works. Here are some things I am a little confused about.
- Hiashi (Hinata's and Hanabi's father) and Hizashi (Neji's father) are twin brothers. But Hiashi was born before Hizashi, and thus Hiashi became a member of the main family and Hizashi became a member of the branch family. So, was Hiashi's and Hizashi's father from the main family?
- If Hiashi's and Hizashi's father was from the main family, then it means that the older child of a main family member becomes a main family member, and the younger child becomes a branch family member right? If so, then why isn't this the case for Hinata and her younger sister Hanabi? Both of them are in the main family.

Yup I hope that my explanation is clear... It's a bit hard to describe haha. But anyway, if you have any ideas to the above questions, please do answer! Thank you for your help! :)

I'm not to clear about this my self, but I'll try my best to explain what I do know:

1. In Japan, the first born son (or child, in some families) is the sole heir. If it's twins (in the case of Hiashi and Hizashi), then tough luck to the second one, because the first one to be born is considered the heir.

2. Yes, Hiashi and Hizashi's father was most likely from the main house. Otherwise they both would have become branch house members. (It's possible that the father was from the main house and the mother was from the branch house.)

3. Since sons are usually the ones who carry on the family name, but Hiashi had only daughters (Hinata and Hanabi). Since Hinata was the first born child, she automatically received the title of heir to the clan.

This is what I'm guessing:

1. Since Hinata is the heir to the clan, it is possible that any children she does have will automatically be in the main house.

2. Since Hanabi is the second born child, it is possible that either all of any children she has will be in the main house or only the first born child will be in the main house. (This could possibly depend on whom she marries.)

So, after nine more years of source material, I think there may be a more nuanced situation. I posit it works as follows:

For the most part, members of the Branch house are descended from other members of the Branch house. Members of the Main house are descended from members of the Main house. We know that something like this has to be true or else there would be no way to explain the fact the branch and main houses are approximately of equal size (or how Hyuga Ko can be Main House without being Hinata's older brother).

Hizashi's demotion, therefore, is an exceptional circumstance. This is consistent with the rest of what we know; at no point in canon is it ever suggested Hinata or Hanabi be sealed, so it's clearly not an issue of who will not be heir. Instead, it is because Hizashi is a twin--more than that, and IDENTICAL twin; you can't guarantee that identical twins are *never* mixed up, so you can't guarantee that the adult known as Hiashi actually was the firstborn and therefore the clear head of the clan. Were Hizashi to remain in the main house, he'd be a coup d'etat waiting to happen. Putting him in the Branch house ensured there was no way he could possibly challenge Hiashi's position. I also guess that the Main branch always keeps demotion as an option for handling unruly members of its ranks, but it's probably almost never needed.

(It's worth mentioning that while Hanabi and Hinata technically both vie for the position of leader, the fact there's no question over who is firstborn means there's far less question over who becomes leader.)

Hinata wasn't disowned by her father. Hanabi "is neither the head of nor the heir to the household." Hinata is still the heir, however her father doesn't pay attention to her because he thinks she is weak. Hiashi spends more time with Hanabi because he believes that she has more potential than Hinata. Yah, pretty much the Hyuuga family lives in the same house. Well, that goes for the Head and Branch family. Because the Branch family is supposed to protect the Head family at all times, therefore it makes sense for them to live together. However, the rest of the Hyuuga's [assuming there are more] would live like the Uchiha's do. In separate houses, but in one area. Yes, Hanabi has been shown in the anime/manga. Once was in a flashback of Hiashi's when Kurenai was talking with him about Hinata. Another time was at the funeral of the Third Hokage and also when Tsunade became the Hokage. However, the most time she was shown consecutively was during the Chuunin Exams. More specifically, Neji and Naruto's fight. In the beginning, Hanabi is seven years old, and in Naruto Shippuden, she is 10 years old. There's not much to Hanabi except for the fact that she deals with a great burden. Her father is always training her because he knows she is stronger than Hinata, but still not as strong as Neji. But other than that, Hanabi isn't a main character. Anyways, I hope that helps ^_^

If you think about it because Hiashi and Hizashi are twin brothers their father had to seperate them to prevent the clan from chaos. They had to have one go to main branch and one to the Second branch, thus preventing brotherly feud for the Head of Main Branch because both are the same age. If you follow the story of Neji's father, you can tell he wanted to be the Head of Main Branch when Hinata was training with her father and Hiashi had to seal off Neji's fathers powers(When they were younger). Because Hizashi had the seal placed upon him from being second branch, he could not rebel against Hiashi because he would be killed before doing anything. If they were to fight amongst themselves then many people of the Hyuuga Clan as well as other Clans will look down upon the Hyuuga Clan since it is supposed to be a Strong and Noble Clan. This system doesn't apply to Hinata and Hanabi because they both weren't born at the same time and both aren't chosen to be the Head of Main Branch. Hinata was first born and then Hanabi was born a bit later. If Hiashi choses Hinata to be head branch, then he can argue that Hinata is a lot older and more knowledeable. If Hiashi and Hizashi were born years apart, then Hizashi would remain in the Head Branch, but Hiashi would be leader because he would be years older, thus giving Hizashi less of a reason to be able to be the leader, he wouldn't feel that the opportunity was taken from him. Hope I helped!

What is known is the fact that Hinata is the heiress of the Hyuuga family and Hanabi is her younger sister and that Hiashi was made head of the main family while Hizashi was banished to a branch family.

I think that they are categorized when they come of age because then a head of the family must be chosen. That would explain why Hinata and Hanabi are still part of the main family or perhaps Hiashi was expecting Hinata to die in one of their missions thus making Hanabi the heiress or perhaps when Hinata comes of age she will be made head of the family and Hanabi will be given the "curse mark" and be banished to a branch family. That is unless Naruto makes it to Hokage rank before that happens (cuz he promised Neji that he will change the Hyuuga way after he will become Hokage)

PS As a PERSONAL STATEMENT I would love it if Hanabi were made the heiress because then Hinata would be free to be with Naruto (I'm a NaruHina fan).I think the heiress would be forced to marry a branch family member in order to pass down the Hyuuga's (main family) name

In Japan the first born is considered the Heir. Both Hisashi and Hizashi were from Main house but Hisashi was born first that's why Hisashi is the Head. It's sort of like a monarchy in that way, the rulers are chosen by lineage not by election.

As for why Hanabi's the heiress and not her older sister is because of strength not birth right. You have to keep in mind, in the Hygua clan they value strength above all else.

So when Hinata lost a fight against her sister--Hinata was also most likely holding back a significant amount as not to hurt her little sister--and lost several more times, the Clan--or rather the Head and elders--decided to make Hanabi the heir. Despite the fact that Hinata was born first.

In my opinion I think Hinata was holding back since she's the type of person who doesn't like to hurt anyone unless necessary especially since that person is Hanabi who she basically raised.

with hinata that is true so Hanabi is heir Does the entire Hyuuga family live in the same house? --not realy Hinata runs around the house a lot, and Neji's always there, so I assume they do...? But if Hinata was disowned and Kurenai was her legal guardian (technically), then shouldn't she be living with Kurenai? ---she should be Has Hanabi ever been shown in the manga or anime? She's a bit character. How old is she? What's the deal with her, anyway? --- yes i think

I didn't realize that. Probably the writer was so wrapped up in the series that they forgot to tie all the dots together. You're right. That really doesn't make sense. haha. And your explanation was clear enough to understand.
