Well, although there have been countless specialized and sub-classes found in fantasy and RPG literature, there are basically 6 standard class types.

Fighter, Mage, Cleric, Thief, Druid, Ranger

Most other class types can safely fall in as a sub-class of one of these or a hybrid of two or more.

Warrior --> fortified and heavy armor to absorb damage, but higher attack (melee & defense)

Knight --> more fortified than warrior (melee & defense)

Templar --> lots of stamina and massive strength (melee & defense)

Thief --> quick attack and stealth (melee & DPS)

Martial Artist --> hand-to-hand combat (melee & DPS)

Blade Dancer --> damage-per-second and team stat benefits (melee & DPS)

Hunter --> bow & arrow (in some cases a pet or familiar is included) (ranged DPS)

Engineer --> often heavy armour and explosive guns (ranged DPS)

Ranger --> powerful gun-user (ranged DPS)

Cleric --> healer, remove debuffs, revival, fortification (support/healing)

Bard --> guitar-user; healing and attack (support/healing)

Shaman --> immense protection/attack power using spirits (support/healing)

Magician --> burst damage, variety of ways to exploit weaknesses of opponent (magic DPS)

Illusionist --> more offensively-focused version of bard; confuse and weaken enemies; party buff (magic DPS)

Warlock --> debuff enemies, massive attack power against single enemies (magic DPS)
