ok, you said a lot of info and you've got it, so there may be spoilers here, but i'll try not to include them.

Death note summary:

it's about a brainiac high school kid named Light Yagami, who is extremely bored with life and how rotten the world is. then a similarly bored shinigami (death god) named Ryuuk decides to drop his death note in the human world just for kicks. Light picks it up. he reads the rules: "a human whose name is written in this notebook shall die." of course he doesn't believe it at first but can't resist trying. after a couple of tries, he discovers the book is real and decides he will use it to rid the world of evil and create a utopia with him as the god of the new world. when tons of criminals just suddenly drop dead in a span of five days, the international police convenes and asks L, the best detective in the world whose real name, face and whereabouts are unknown, to solve the case of Kira (Light's name to the public). thus a battle of wits begins between the two, with whoever gets found first shall die.

What's a Death Note?

Death Note is a notebook owned by the shinigami (death gods). these notes have rules (not written in exact words):

1) a human whose name is written in the Death Note shall die.

2) the writer should also know the face of the person he wants to kill, so the note cannot confuse him with another person sharing the same name.

3) if the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the name, it shall happen.

4) if the cause of death is not specified, the person will just die from a heart attack in 40 seconds.

5) if the writer manages to include the cause of death, details of the death can be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

these notes are used by the shinigami to lengthen their lives. shinigami eyes can see the names and lifespans of humans, so that's very convenient for such a purpose. they kill a human using the notee and whatever remains of that human's lifespan will be added to the shinigami's lifespan, thus lengthening his life. if they don't kill people they will die. (there are tons of other rules regarding the Death Note, all of which are revealed throughout the show. i remember most of them but these are the basic rules and therefore all we really need to know)

**Shinigami Eyes

the eyes play an important part in Death Note say they have to be mentioned. shinigami eyes can see the names and lifespans of all humans. an owner of a Death Note can make 'the deal' with the shinigami who once owned the note. the deal is that the owner can have the shinigami eyes at the cost of one-half of his life. so if you make the deal and have 100 years of your life, you'll have 50 years left. when Ryuuk offers this deal to Light, he wisely refuses. Misa makes this deal twice, once with Rem and again with Ryuuk thus significantly shortening her life. Mikami makes the deal with Ryuuk.

Characters:

Light Yagami/Kira - the protagonist bad guy of the show. the protagonist does NOT have to be the good guy (like Macbeth), but he does have to be the main character, the one where the story revolves, and that's Light. he is a 17-year old highschool student, incredibly smart with a great sense of justice but bored. when he finds the Death Note, he uses it to fulfill his vision of creating a utopia, a world with no crime and sin, with him as god and his word as law.

L - the antagonist, who in this case is the good guy, since the technical definition of antagonist is one who opposes the main character/protagonist. he is regarded as the world's greatest detective, and the only person in the world who has the power to mobilize the world's police. his face, name and whereabouts are unknown to everyone, and he can only be contacted through his assistant, Watari, whose face and real name are also unknown. his other aliases, Erald Coil and Danuve are also the top 2 and 3 best detectives in the world, but the people don't know it's just one person. L has a lot of weird characteristics: he sits with his knees up to his chin (he says sitting normally decreases his reasoning by 40%), eats nothing but sweets, holds things delicately and hates to wear shoes. his appearance covers his great skills as a detective. he is an orphan by the way, and multi-national.

Misa Amane/Second Kira - self-appointed girlfriend of Light. Kira killed the murderer of her parents which sparked her admiration and love for him. she was given a note by the shinigami Rem, when another shinigami named Jealous saved Misa's life and died doing it. Misa uses the notebook to find the real Kira, disguising herself as the Second Kira. she is a famous actress and pop star in Japan, but not very smart so Light keeps her in a tight leash. you can say she has deluded herself into thinking that Light does love her, but the only reason Light heeps her is because she has the shinigami eyes.

Ryuuk - the shinigami who drops his note which is picked up by Light. he doesn't really give a crap about what goes on, and says he is neither on Kira's side or L's side. he doesn't tell Light immediately important things about the note, which usually irks Light. he does things for the sake of apples, which he loves.

Teru Mikami - a worshipper of Kira, in every aspect of the word (he calls Kira "god"). he is tasked by Light to act as Kira when he was driven to a corner, a role Mikami relishes. he is a little unstable, saying "Eliminate" when he writes names on the note, and more extreme than Light, wanting to kill people who are lazy and those who committed crimes in the past but are now repentant, a fact that also alarmed Light. he is a prosecutor and in his childhood was bullied for his strong sense of justice and righteousness. he also had great deduction skills.

Nate River/Near - the first in line to succeed L. he shares some similarities with L, like the sitting position and likes to play with things like toy robots, just how L played with his food. he is smart, withdrawn and logical, and as opposed to Mello, he got the support of the US government to track down Kira and is the leader of the SPK (Special Provision for Kira). proof of his brains is his 3 years' worth of independent investigations before the founding of SPK.

Mihael Keehl/Mello - my favorite character :) second in line to succeed L. he did not get along with Near because he can't take being second best, so when Near asked him to work together to track Kira he turned him down and left the orphanage at 15. he ended up in a Mafia gang in LA, using them as his henchmen to find Kira. he is just as smart and logical as Near, but his emotions usually get the better of him. he shares L's love for sweets as Mello is usually seen eating chocolate. he is considered a criminal as well because he uses illegal means to get what he wants (like kidnapping), but his help is invaluable to the SPK, because he manages to find out more about the note and relays his knowledge to them in exchange for his only picture in the world.

Kiyomi Takada - Light's college classmate and 'girlfriend' (at the same time as Misa). when Light joins the hunt for Kira with L, they grew distant. after graduating she gets a job as a newscaster in a Japanese network NHN and eventually gets chosen by Mikami as a spokesperson for Kira, without knowing her past connection with Light/Kira. Light calls her proud and smart, but Near disagrees with the latter description, saying she is only studious but not smart. like Misa she gets used by Light to further his plans, saying she will be "the goddess of the new world".

these are the most important characters in the entire show. other supporting characters are also important but there are too many so refer to Wikipedia for descriptions.

Japanese Investigation Team:

Soichiro Yagami (Light's dad)

Tota Matsuda (the show's comic relief)

Shuichi Aizawa (afro guy who first suspected Light as Kira after 'that' episode)

Kanzo Mogi (the quiet buff guy)

Hirokazu Ukita (killed by Misa)

Hideki Ide (joined the team only when Light became L)

Watari (real name: Quillsh Wammy; L's assistant and owner of Wammy House, the orphanage where L, Near and Mello came from)

SPK members:

Commander Lester (sort of like Near's right hand man)

Halle Lidner (Mello's connection to the SPK, at least in the manga)

Giovanni

Yostuba group:

i don't know most of the people here, but the only member you really need to know is Kyosuke Higuchi, the person acting as Kira when Light purposely lost his memory to remove suspicion from him. Eventually he is caught by L and Light, and is killed by Light when his memories returned.

bad person: Light, but he is the protagonist

good person: everyone against Light like L, Near, Mello, the SPK and those in the Japanese investigation team, but they are the antagonist because they oppose our main character.

Raito/Light Yagami is the high school model student with nothing to do. One day, he finds a notebook on the ground. On its cover, is written in "Death Note". At first, he's skeptical but he takes it anyway. He decides to try it out, as it has written instructions behind the cover.

He writes down a name and waits. It turns out to be true. The Death Note will kill a person if the writer scribes the name while picturing their face. If the writer does not write the cause of death, the victim will die of a heart attack.

Seeing this as an opportunity to rid the world of criminals, Light/Raito takes on the name "Kira" and starts his quest. But the police are quickly catching on...and they're wondering if this is the right thing...

So begins the chase.

Main characters: Light/Raito Yagami, L

I love this anime/manga. It's just too addicting and awesome. Especially when later on... *spoiler* Light/Raito gets a little tied up. *end spoiler*

Death note is about

Light, a high school student, is bored cus he thinks his daily life is the same old days.. getting praised by teachers for being the best student in the class, and the same crimes keep happening around him.. there is only one thing he thinks of this world.. rotten..

Ryuku, who is the death god.. are also bored in his world cus there is nothing to do, and he's too damn lazy to write someone's name on the death note (when he writes someone's name on it and imagine his face, the guy will die).. one day he drops his death note to the earth.. and it was found by Light..

Light thought the thing was ridiculously so untrue, but he tried it anyway.. and it worked.. he got so scared at first, but then he was excited to 'change' the world so that there is no crime.. the power that he holds now got the better of him, he became greedy and kill those who are not innocent and innocent as long as they stand in his ways.. because of this Light is also titled as Kira (taken from the word killer)

L didn't like wat he had done.. so he trapped him one day by telling one of the prisoners who was about to be executed to be L.. L did this in the hope of seeing how Light kills people.. and the broadcast was told be a worldwide broadcast when it's really aired in Kantou area..

Light fall for the trap, the cat and mouse game between these two main characters begin..

(デスノート, Desu Nōto?) is a Japanese manga series originally written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The series primarily centers around a high school student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.

Death Note first began as a manga series. It was first serialized by Shueisha in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from the first issue in December 2003 to May 2006, with 108 chapters in total. The series has been published in its entirety in 12 tankōbon volumes in Japan, and is currently in publication in North America. The series has been adapted into a pair of live-action films (released in Japan on June 17, 2006 and November 3, 2006 respectively), and an anime series which commenced airing in Japan on October 3, 2006. Also, a novelization of the series, written by light novelist Nisio Isin, was released in Japan on August 1, 2006.

is a brilliant, but bored, high school student who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a Shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgment on criminals.

Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins.

characters:

Light Yagami (Kira) (夜神 月, Yagami Raito?)

The main character of Death Note, Light is a brilliant but bored 17-year old student. When he finds the Death Note, dropped in the human world by Ryuk, he decides to use it to kill all criminals and earns the title Kira. His ultimate goal is to cleanse the world of evil to create a utopia and then reign over this new world as its God. He calls himself Justice.

L (エル, Eru?)

L is the world's three top-rated detectives (through two additional aliases), tasked with tracking down and arresting Kira. As such, he is Light's principal nemesis. His disheveled appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. L has many quirks, such as sitting in an odd manner (he squats on the edge of his seat, with his knees up by his chin), snacking on sweets in the middle of meetings, and holding his cellphone and other objects in a peculiar manner. He often takes drastic strategies to confuse and force his opponents, and on several occasions he has willingly disclosed several of his weaknesses to Kira at the risk of his own life in the hopes that he would lure him into a trap.

Misa Amane (弥 海砂, Amane Misa?)

A girl with an immense crush on Kira. She is a popular idol in Japan, and tends to wear clothing in many different styles, depending on what she is doing. She is immature and has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person (calling herself "Misa-Misa") in an attempt to be cute. Misa is completely devoted to Light, and she once said that she loved him "at first sight". Light, however, only views her as an asset to his plans because of her Death Note and her "Shinigami Eyes" (that she obtained at the cost of half of her remaining life span, twice). These "Shinigami Eyes" give Misa the ability to know people's names by looking at their faces, thereby giving Kira an edge in his battle against his enemies. Misa read in the newspapers that the murderer of her family was punished by Kira, explaining her total devotion to him, regardless of whether she thinks of his actions as good or evil

Mello (メロ, Mero?)

Mello was an orphan who grew up with Near in Watari's shelter for gifted children. Like Near, Mello was one of the candidates to become L's successor. Similar to L's fondness for sweets, he is often seen eating bars of chocolate. Although Mello is quite intelligent, he often lets his emotions get the better of him, unlike Near or L.

Near (ニア, Nia?)

Near was a primary candidate to become L's successor and calls himself N during the course of his investigations. He shares a number of similarities with L. Much like how L plays with things such as sugar cubes and forks, Near is frequently shown playing with toys or his hair. Near also sits in an unusual manner similar to L, but with some slight differences. He offered to join forces with Mello to fight Kira, but Mello turned him down. Near then gained the support of the US government and formed the Secret Provision for Kira (SPK).

Teru Mikami (魅上 照, Mikami Teru?)

Mikami is selected as the fourth Kira by Light, after Light decides that it is too dangerous for the Death Note to be near Misa or himself, since he and Misa are currently under surveillance by Aizawa and Mogi. A prosecuting attorney and adamant supporter of Kira, Mikami shares many of the same ideals, thoughts, and priorities as Kira, and is ecstatic when he discovers that Kira, his God, has chosen him, proving that God is on his side and watching. He is completely devoted and loyal to Kira, believing that divine justice must be brought down upon the people. Little is known about his personal life; he appears to have no hobbies or anything else of the sort. He chants "delete" with each name he writes down in the Death Note due to events in his past when he thought God was "deleting" the evil people in his life. He, like Misa, has made the exchange of half his remaining years for Shinigami Eyes.

Ryuk (リューク, Ryūku?)

The original Shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world, which Light would pick up. Acting out of pure boredom, Ryuk begins the story of Death Note on a whim. It is stated that Ryuk found the second Death Note in the Shinigami world. The most important facet of Ryuk's character is that he is not Light's friend. Ryuk often refuses to aid Light and instead enjoys watching him struggle for his goal. He acts for his own interests and entertainment, and often fails to tell Light key details about the Death Note. However, Ryuk will aid Light if it serves his own goals, such as providing amusement or obtaining apples.

Rem (レム, Remu?)

The female Shinigami who first gives Misa her Death Note and "eyes." Similar to Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, she purposely gives one of them to Misa Amane. Rem inherited her second Death Note from Jealous, another Shinigami who died when he saved Misa's life, and thought it only right to pass it on to Misa. Oddly enough, Rem inherits Jealous' love for Misa as well and is prompt to defend Misa even at the cost of her life. She shows this when she openly shows her lack of trust for Light, stating that she will kill him if Misa dies before her time.

ummm on your question on whos the bad guy.....

most animes are linear on the sense that the antagonist is always the bad guy but this is quite different......its a matter of morals and values so the bad guy really depends on your opinion

btw you can watch the new releases of death note in crunchyroll.com or you may download them on kuro-hanasubs.com
