Theres plenty of anime I haven't seen yet either because it doesn't interest me or I haven't gotten around to it. Everyone has their own taste.

But for me, I would tell a fan:

Cowboy Bebop

Samurai Champloo

Full metal alchemist

Full metal panic

This question and the answers have been quite confusing...

"These are the anime that when you mention them to others who claim they are fans of anime and yet if they don't know what you are talking about you look at them like do you live in a cave?" This really makes me drop out all the Narutos and DBZs and Pokemons from the list since god dammit, even the animehaters know these. And my personal opinion (no offense), if those are the ONLY anime you know and you call yourself an animefan while snorting at everything else that isn't Naruto, OP, Bleach or something similar, you don't even have the right to call yourself an animefan... :P

Now, for the list...first one that pops onto my mind is Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is both hated and loved by many and I'm the guy who has mixed feelings and likes the manga better... xD. Anyways it's still a great anime whatwith the last two episodes being done with no money and therefore being kinda...dissapointing ending (although the EoE patched the ending quite nicely...).

Then there's Cowboy Bebop. I don't really know much about this, I've watched 3 episodes so far, nothing amazing yet....I'll keep watching them every once in a while. Although truth to be told, I prefer an anime with a clear beginning and ending (like Steins;Gate or Anohana) and the episodic feeling isn't really for me... :P. Now that I started this ranting about storylines, I might as well progress with my "Why Naruto, OP, Bleach, DBZ and such aren't that great as they're made out to be" -rant: the neverending story feel that I get from those series (especially Bleach lately) gives me the impression that the author is just milking the series and going with a predictable pattern on and on until even the slowest of us realize that he's just making **** up as he goes and the plot, the uninteresting generic characters and the world are just a big pile of ****.

Oops, it seems I strayed from the subject a bit. But to make it simple, Cowboy Bebop isn't really my cup of tea but it really is one of those "classics" that the animefans should really at least know.

And onto the next one: I think I'll go with Code Geass. It's a lot like Death Note and it's in my list mostly because DN wasn't originally an anime, so CG can take it's place...there's not enough room for both of them and due to their similarity the one anime that is "more of a pure anime" gets to stay. All in all, really intense, what with some needless stuff on the second season and such...Overall really entertaining with a great ending.

Welcome to the NHK! ...This may very well be on the list only because I just watched it but damn, that was probably the best, most realistic and definitely one of the few animes that everyone can relate to at least a little...(unless you're some douchebag with no thoughts or emotions...) Lots of dark humor, modern psychological issues and dealing with them, getting secluded from the society, internet suicides, conspiracy theories....this anime has it all. Don't let the hentaigame stuff fool you...it really gets deep when the plot thickens...(Well, "some kind of a plot", it's a slice of life but whatever, it still has some!)

What we're on number 4 already? Hmm....those hentai games remind me of the final candidate. Actually it kinda fits the theme perfectly, a show about otakus: Genshiken! (Tatta-da-daa!). Yeah, although it has an anime, definitely read the manga, since it goes further... Really enjoyable, all otakus should be able to at least somewhat relate to the characters... :D

Hmm...let's see that list again...

1) Neon Genesis Evangelion

2) Cowboy Bebop

3) Code Geass

4) Welcome to the NHK!

5) Genshiken

Yeah, I kinda just went with what popped onto my thoughts... I could be missing something huge but whatever... :D

My list would be one from each genre:

1. FMA: Brotherhood - Action

2. Pokémon - no particular genre, shonen, I guess? I grew up with it ^^

3. Wolf's Rain - suspense, thriller

4. K-On!! (The second season) - Slice-of-Life. One of the best out there actually. Not the 1st season though :P

5. Evangelion - who hasn't heard of this?

6. 5 Centimeters per Second - Romance, Tragedy. Only manga that made me frustrated, sad and happy at the same time.

7. Captain Tsubasa

8. HunterxHunter

and.. lastly 9. Letter Bee - Suspense for the 2nd season, I guess.

I have heard of Code Geass, Gurren Lagann & Death Note a lot, but I haven't watched those yet.

In my biased opinion, one simply cannot refer to one's self as an anime aficionado with any integrity if one is ignorant by choice of the seminal works that formed the roots of this majestic artform.

1. Astro Boy, the classic 60's original. Yes, it's black and white, 4:3 aspect ratio, monaural soundtrack, and very limited animation. And it STILL can mesmerize a modern audience with its morality tales that withstand the test of time. If you've seen ANY of its subsequent reincarnations, you owe it to yourself to see how it all started. ALL modern anime series are progressions of one form or other from this groundbreaking landmark treasure.

2. Speed Racer. Anime is now full color, and gives us a hero who isn't a monster-fighting superhero or a robot. He's just a young guy into winning car races. But what a car. He's got a push button for everything! Despite the fact that his own life is a soap opera, winning a race is less important to him than helping out a fellow human being in trouble. The first anime that proved that laughable dubbing can be endearing.

3. Star Blazers. Anime gets serious. The first one with story arcs, which meant you had to watch every episode in its proper sequence. It had characters which behaved in a truer human way than a lot of real people I know. So brilliant it launched a huge franchise, with several major motion pictures to its credit. It continues to this very day with a new remake series.

4. Sailor Moon. Anime stars heroic girls. The one that broke the shojo barrier and demanded to be loved by the whole world. It proved that females could fight evil and didn't need to throw away their femininity to do it. A remake of this one is also on the way.

5. Tenchi Muyo! Harem comedy. Not the first, but arguably the best, even by today's standards. These wonderful characters have been reincarnated in more alternate universes than any other. Confusing? Yes. Does it matter? Hell, no! Just relax and enjoy their crazy adventures.

6. Ranma 1/2. Anime become a classic sitcom. Here's a show that pokes fun at literally EVERYTHING. Romance, martial arts, mythology, stereotypes, and does it all harmlessly and hilariously, while getting you all caught up in its increasingly madcap web. You wouldn't have InuYasha, if it wasn't for Ranma!

I'll leave it to others to discuss the more modern animes that you should see. But if you want me to take you seriously as a respectable, knowledgeable guru of Japanese animation, better get these six series under your belt, pronto. Cuz these are the acknowledged GIANTS of the eras gone by. Not to know them, is not to know the thing you claim to love.

For some reason I just barely think of Pokemon as anime, probably because I watched it constantly as a kid without even knowing Japan existed.

Brock holding up a rice ball and calling it a sandwich, everyone. God bless 4Kids, sarcasm.

I don't understand why Neon Genesis Evangelion is the series EVERYONE HAS TO WATCH. I honestly just didn't really find the appeal to it, it wasn't my style and it felt like it was trying really hard to be deep but I just didn't have the patience for it when it's advertised as TEH GRETEST AIME EVR!!!1!!

If you want a psychological series, sure, it's fine. But it's not for everyone and I'm tired of friggin' hearing that. Stop it.

I think every anime fan should know about Doraemon. It's something constantly referenced and referred to in Japanese culture. Mazinger Z by Go Nagai was one of the first Giant Fighter Mech series and helped heavily define the genre. Any of Osamu Tezuka's more popular works; Astro Boy, Black Jack, Phoenix, etc. He was a genius of a man and was very morally exquisite.

And, of course, Lupin the III. Why the hell isn't Lupin on your list?

Why should every anime fan NEED to know certain titles? They only need to know the shows that meet their tastes.

I LOVE Gundam Wing but no way I'll recommend it to anyone who prefers slice of life series.

I LOVE Captain Tsubasa but there's no way I'll tell someone who prefers fantasy to five it a watch.
