In manga, what is cleaning, typesetting and redrawing?

Question

i was hoping to help out with maybe a manga series and i wanted to know what this type of stuff was? can any1 explain to be what they mean and what other jobs ( apart from translating) there are. Thanxx ^_^

Though I'm not in this line of work, or haven't done this myself, this is what I've come to understand these things as:

Cleaning - If the scan is messy, trying to make it up a better quality by erasing marks from the scanner and such.

Typesetting - Inputting the translated text in the text bubbles, pretty much.

Redrawing - Sometimes, erasing the text in a manga can erase some of the picture. That would mean redrawing it. And in a licensed manga, an editor might find something to be inappropriate, and will have the panel redrawn. A good example is Misty in Pokemon. Her shirt and shorts were redrawn in the American prints to be longer and less showy.

The general positions in a scanlation group are: [Scanner/Raw Provider] - Translator - Proofreader - Cleaner - Typesetter - QC An editor does both cleaning and typesetting. Cleaning means they rotate, level, dodge/burn, scale, crop the raws (scans of pages in original language) and erase all text. Some groups ask their cleaners (or editors) to clean out sound effects. Typesetting is pasting text from the translated script on to the blank/text-less images of the raws. In other words, editors do what the 'cleaner' and 'typesetter' do. Requirements for cleaning and typesetting usually require Photoshop CS3+ (and some experience with the program). Some groups have also begun to use gimp, a free image manipulation program that can be downloaded via internet. Typesetting also requires ability to download and install fonts used (such as Felt, Anime Ace, Wild Words etc.) Yeah, proofreaders are one of the needed jobs of scanlation. All better groups have proofreaders. Translators tend to be too wordy (like me), or have a weird way of wording things, despite being a native English speaker. Proofreaders are expected to be able to re-word sentences/phrases if needed and change incorrect grammar and spelling. They are particularly needed when files are saved as .txt (notepad) or .rtf (wordpad) because they do not have "spellcheck" that is avaliable on .docx (word document). *EDIT: Oh well...maybe my answer wasn't need. :(

everything in all means actually translating the manga from japanese, korean or chinese into English. ( or another language) and try to keep it in the original state. As clear as possible the most quality as possible.

Cleaning : erasing the japanese,korean or chinese text. and all the other sfx*.

typesetting : in the cleaned textbaloons and sfyx will be put in the english translations

redrawing : i don't exactly know what it is.. but i think it is to make the manga clearer as the final stap.

and then the people who are translating it they also have a proof reader to check out if they didn't miss anything.



*sfx : the sound effects like : *BOOOOOOOOOOM* *WOEEEEEEEEEEESH* etc. XD
