I need an idea for a flash animation project. I tried a few things of my own but it all came out too infantile.

I would prefer something of this sort:
http://www.bozzetto.com/flashfilms2.htm

There are lots of great things here.

This project is for school, and is entirely open ended (but no racism, sexism or things like that allowed).

Can you guys help me find an idea?

PS: I would prefer if it is funny, and not too much drawing of humans involved. That's what comes out infantile...lol

Depends on whether you're doing it in group or doing it individually. If you wish to stand out from the rest of the students, then your animation sense and skills gotta be good in order to execute a convincing story. If you're doing it a group, then you could hope to achieve a better work if all of them co-operate well. If you're doing it solo, then you can have no concern about group members objecting your decision.

Check out the list from the sources given below, these animations had very few characters involved to be drawn and animate, but yet can be quite fascinating. These projects examples had somehow reached to a level where it can be worth to raise the animator's reputation and given them a better chance to be hired. You may try; at least to aim your project to a level that guarantees a better future, and not just completing it for project's sake and let it it turns out to be yesterday's news.

Of all the links given below, you may try referring to the first one from YouTube, where this type of comedy is categorized as "black comedy". It doesn't even need human speeches, just some squeaking + convincing animation to carry out the story. Hope it helps.

I always prefer the current affairs. The hot topic today: 1. Times square time bomb: Do a flash animation of how the car might have be driven there, how the cops handled it or what would happen if it did blew up. 2. The oil spill: How oil have been spreading closer to the shore day by day. Google up some environmental effects and add notes to the animation. Maybe buttons to click and notes come up? Good luck!
