So I like anime clearly :) I'd say I'm otaku but I'm not really. I haven't mwatched much anime either.
Here's a list of some I remember watching:
One Piece
Fairy Tail
Deadman Wonderland
DB
DBZ
DBGT
Bleach
Yu Yu Hakusho
OHSHC
Fruits Basket [Furuba]
Disgaea
Clannad (SO MUCH CRYING!!!!)
Clannad After Story
Black Cat
Love Hina
School Days
D.N.Angel
Elfen Lied
Death Note
Shugo Chara
Buso Renkin
Tsubasa
HighSchool of the Dead
Hellsing
FMA
FMA Brotherhood
K-ON
Lucky Star
D.Gray Man
Cowboy Bebop Angel Beats
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Toradora
KHR
Maid-sama
Code Geass
Toaru majuttsu no Index
Kaze No Stigma
Tokyo Mew Mew (Don't judge me)
Myself; Yourself
Kanon
Pokemon
Negima
Darker than black
Hetalia (Even though I'm not allowed too ;) haha)
Zombie Loan
Kindaichi Case Files

Some Movies I remember:
Love Hina Christmas Movie
The girl who leapt through time
The disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Spirited away
One Piece The one with the clock (I don't remember what it's called)
One Piece Chopper's kindom (Don't remember what it's called)
One Piece Dead End adventure (Don't remember either)
Bleach Memories of Nobody
Bleach Diamond Rebellion (Don't remember)
Bleach Fade to black
Bleach Hell Chapter (Was it Chapter of Hell? Or Hell Chapter)

I don't mind if you suggest movies. I'll watch Sub or Dub, I seriously don't mind. I watch anime for the story, not for the freaking way they sound. Although I love Voice Actors, what annoys me now is this feud over Sub and Dub. Does it seriously matter? Not to me anyway.

Please and Thankyou's ♥ :)

Otaku just means obsessed with something. It's also not a good way to describe yourself in Japanese. It's more of an insult if you call someone an otaku. Westerners changed that word otaku to mean anime and manga fan. So, there isn't really a specific number of anime to watch to become an otaku, but I don't think it's a thing to aspire to be..

If you don't already, you should create a MAL (MyAnimeList) account. You can keep track of what anime you're watching right down to the episodes. Plus you can see recommendations based on anime you like to watch. It's much better than asking for recommendations on Y!A in my opinion.

I also don't care much about sub or dub. I usually go with subs unless the dubs are made well. For example, Baccano! was a terrific dubbed anime. Sometimes I see the some clips of the dubs and subs before deciding which one to pick, but it's really not a big deal.

Hope this helped. :)

Remember, that the exact meaning of "otaku" is obsessed fan of somerthing, not necessarily just manga/anime/games (though it's most often applied to this). In Japan there are train otaku (like western railway addicts), idol otaku, etc.

The best you can hope for is to become well-versed enough to recognize stuff from many series.

True "otaku" can recognize stuff from both new and old franchises, delve into classic animes, like Lupin III, Yamato, Macross, Gundam 1979, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon etc, no need to watch every sequel, but watching the first series of each of these (plus the most popular reboots like Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED, Macross Zero/Frontier) will help to round out your knowledge of classic anime

Being able to recognize a large number of characters from different franchises would seem to be a good sense of "otaku" , google sales charts to see what the best-selling manga's are and watch the animes which go with those, maybe get into reading the manga's too

You might not care about sub vs dub, but if you're really concerned about becoming an "otaku" as fast as possible i recommend to only watch sub to save time, that will give you a better knowledge of Japanese honorifics and a better "ear" for how Japanese pronounce things - they pronounce stuff different to how you might think from the Romanized spellings, also they often change idioms when dubbing, but the sub's often leave the joke intact and have on-screen notes explaining facets of Japanese culture and wordplay.

Watch a lot of OVAs and short series, that will give you the most knowledge of different stuff faster, watching 300+ episodes of a single series won't give you the breadth of knowledge.

As much as I like anime and manga, I don't want to be an otaku even though I watch a lot of them. It's not wrong to being an otaku, but saying that you're an otaku makes you really look bad. I think you're more of an 'anime fan' than an otaku. It's different ;)

'Anime fans' are basically, who enjoys the balance of watching anime for entertainment while talking to the others

Anyway, try:

-> ano hi mita hana

-> angel beats

-> durarara

-> another

-> steins;gate

-> sankarea

-> 5centimeters per second

-> danshi koukousei no nichijou

-> phantom~requiem for the phantom

I purely watch anime for simple pleasures. I will discuss anime to the others, but there is nothing like huge obsession that I'm scary

=)

Also , I agree with @L jason. Watch a lot of short series will give you the knowledge of different stuff
