In the episode "teacher" he saves a cat by using alchemy (without a transmutation circle, I'd also like to know how he does this) and makes a hand appear on the side of a house to catch it, my question is what is he exchanging in order to this and the many other times he does things like this? thanks

It's not fully explained as how Edward is able to use alchemy by just using his hands.

'The Truth' that he has seen after he tried to resurrect his mother is the key to how he performs alchemy with only his hands. Before, he can just dry a circle on the ground.

The exchanging of elements is what alchemy is made and composed of. In one of the episodes where Scar comes in, Armstrong mentioned 3 processes: decomposition, restoration, and creation.

Edward's use of alchemy is basically combining or breaking the elements. You have to know what you're doing or you'll screw up. Basically, looking at the scientific chart, let's say Ed can try to make water or decompose it. Water is a mixture of oxygen and hitrogen. By breaking it up, Edward can just clap his hands to break or separate the elements without exchanging anything. There's a counter balance used for this.

When Ed creates a spear, there's basically a hole in the ground leftover. Looking at the spear, it's made of the ground's rocks and metals.

The hand thing that you mention are made from the materials of the house. There's no exchange as long as there's equal amount of material to use at your own expense. Ed used that 'hand' fast enough to save the cat or he would have destroyed the house.

He can use alchemy without a transmutation circle because he saw 'The Truth"

If you look closely, the matter around where he makes things always decreases. He's taking the material the house is made of and just making it into a different shape and projecting it from the house.

He can perform alchemy without a transmutation circle because of his metal arm, which acts as one.

He makes the hand out of either materials of the house, probably from the other side of the house. Or he is using materials from the ground itself to create the hand.

He can do achemy with out a circle because he's seen the gate thing. I'm not sure about the hand things. I think he uses the elements around him. I got a bit confused when watching it.

when ed and his brother try to revive their mother they got to the gate of exchange where they tray their body parts for the soul of their mother if you can see the gate and survive then you can understand how the world works and what balances what this is how he is able to do it and he is not the only one that can do that latter on in the cartoon they show his original master who can do the same thing as him this is what makes him so special and for the hand part all he needs is to think of what he desires for tit to happen

Most of the time it's like earth or metal from the ground...

For example, whenever he makes a spear from the ground, there's a ditch in the ground from where he took the dirt that makes up the spear.
