I loved Death Note! It's really difficult to find another anime that is as good as it, but I think one of these might be something that you'll like:

- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

- Hunter x Hunter (2011)

- Future Diary

- Terror in Resonance

- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

P.S. I REALLY want to stress how much you shouldn't judge an anime by its cover (I'm not saying that you do though). This is especially for Hunter x Hunter. It looks like any other childish anime for children like Pokemon (because the main characters are aged 12 to 19), but I promise you that it is nothing like that. The storyline is intense, there are characters that are literally as smart as Light Yagami, and there's definitely a lot of psychological stuff going on.

Please try watching at least the first 3 episodes of the anime I've recommended before judging it! :)

Code Geass is considered almost a brother to Death Note, I highly recommend it. It is my all time favorite anime but it has the exact same strong plot, characters, and chessmaster style you love from Death Note but otherwise the series differ especially in scale. This is a good thing because in my opinion Code Geass is much better than Death Note regardless of which one you watch first especially because Death Note had a terrible second arc to most viewers. Code Geass on the other hand had its second season nearly double in popularity and had in my opinion one of the most beautiful endings in all of anime and especially of any character.

Code Geass is centered around an alternate universe where the world is controlled by 3 superpowers The Holy Britannian Empire, The Chinese Federation, and The European Union. Lelouch Lamperouge is a student at Ashford Academy in Japan or Area 11 as its now called and spends his days toiling away in the classroom and lives with his blind crippled little sister Nunnally. One day Lelouch ends up crashing into a band of terrorists and finds a mysterious girl who gives him the power of kings or Geass, the ability to make anyone do anything with a single command. It's revealed that Lelouch is in fact the 11th Prince of the Holy Britannian Empire and swears revenge on the world and his father the Emperor for not protecting his mother who was killed by terrorists and letting Nunally live as a cripple for her entire life. Using his genius intellect and newfound power he strives to create a gentle world for his little sister where even strangers can be kind to one another.

This show is honestly the best I have ever seen, it has everything you could want, there's the chessmaster style, mecha action, some school life, betrayal at every corner and constant twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Lelouch is an incredibly charismatic character in comparison to Light and commands your attention always, you'll feel at odds with his decisions but the reasoning for his are profound, he never loses sight of his goal and is put through a gauntlet of turns and twists in his effort to truly change the world. I cannot state how much you will love this anime if you give it a try, it will seriously change your perspectives on certain things and make you try to guess what will happen next even though you'll always be wrong lol. I don't want to end this with saying go watch it but please do, this one quote can pretty much sum up the entire show as Lelouch says "I who destroy the world...and create it anew..."

I really love Terror in Resonance it is very similar to Death Note and 11 episodes so you can watch it in a day if you have nothing else to do :P. I also liked Death Parade which is a Psychological Anime and it also happens to be animated by Madhouse.

-Totally useless fact but Light was in Death Parade for 1 second. http://i.imgur.com/TocwYXH.jpg
