People always complain about dubs one way or the other. My opinion on this is that there is really no such thing as a bad dub but a bad dubbing company. The dubbing companies I think do the best are Funimation and Viz Media. You know a dub is going to be bad if it's picked up by Toei and especially 4kids.

Then again there are a lot of dubs I really enjoy by 4kids. My favorite was Yugioh. Okay even though Yugioh was some-what changed in America. In Japan it was created with the assumption that you read the manga so the story was weird. In America some episodes were dropped to make the story more easy to follow and 4kids did a amazing job. Good voice actors and everything. I also liked Pokemon more by 4Kids then the new company dubbing it (hate Ash's new voice!)

Anyway Funimation and Viz have Japanese companies working with them when they dub, so it always seems to come out alright. So I think there is no such thing as a bad dub, but a bad dubbing company.

Personally I couldn't love the people who make dubs more! it give you a chance to pay attention more to whats going on and understand what they are saying more clearly than reading annoying subtitles

Hense my site I made recently :

One thing that never fails to rub me the wrong way as to dubbings for the American market, is that they are way toooo exaggerated. Listening to a couple of episodes wears me out, they are artificially intense, they always sound as if the actors dubbing the voices were in a hurry to get to the bathroom.

Frankly speaking, the Mexican dubbings are way superior because they incorporate a lot of the slang and colloquial speech common to the culture and they sound like normal people. They are so funny grownups actually enjoy them, not because they like the cartoon, but because they make you laugh. The language and expressions used are understood by kids one way, and by grownups in another totally different way, not offensive or with double entendres, just funny.

Dubbing also has to make amends for cultural differences, so dubbing should also reflect the culture of the target market. I take it that there are guidelines to be followed when dubbing so that could account for some of the things you mention.

Yes, some companies are bad, but there are plenty of bad dubbers as well.

Take a listen to some of these horrifically bad dubs:

well there are rare times when dub is better (i.e. cowboy bebop, trigun, samurai champloo, fullmetal alchemist)due to good voice actors, but most of the time its crap........
